After an unfortunate Motor Vehicle Accident, I… at 30 years old, began my painful journey. I have been diagnosed with 6 autoimmune disorders. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, narcolepsy, Sjogrens Syndrome and sicca syndrome. It has been a long, painful journey which has included deep depression as well as anxiety.
I lost my identity which, at 30, I believed was being a nurse and taking care of others. Now, I can only care for myself and volunteer when able.

My quality of life, I have found lies greatly in my perspective and my ability to show up for life. My days are consumed with doctors appointments mixed with having to rest when needed.
Currently, the narcolepsy hasn’t been controlled well by medication and lifestyle changes. I know though, that every situation is an opportunity for growth. I believe God only gives us what we can handle. We have choices. Just because my life went upside down, doesn’t mean I can lay down praying for God to take me. I must incorporate, diet, exercise and make lifestyle changes to improve my circumstances. I’m not a victim. I’m a survivor, Resilient, capable and free to be me. I am not what I have to be.

Knowledge is power! I will end in saying… Should you be in a medical situation where a doctor is giving you choices for treatment. Stop. Look at him in the eyes and ask… if I were your daughter what would you tell me to do? You will see his facial expression change as he forgets what he learned in the textbook and start thinking personally, and in a compassionate way.
Life is a journey…not a destination. So please enjoy your journey.
