The fact that medical marijuana has been gaining traction in the last few years is something people with mental illness should look into. And we all have the cannabinoids in cannabis to thank for.

Cannabis has more than a hundred innate components called cannabinoids. The most prominent of all cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). While the former is responsible for the psychoactive effect, the latter carries more of the mental benefits. That’s not to say THC contains no health benefits. However, some people might not be comfortable with the “high” and “floating” effect from THC, so they choose the non-psychoactive component.

In this article, we’re going to focus on how CBD can help with a common and stigmatized mental issue – depression

A Word from the Experts

Although studies formulated around cannabis and mental health still need further research and proof, experts are claiming that CBD is already showing some promising effects to deter mental health issues.

There is particular research that involved animals that proved CBD is non-psychotomimetic and has antidepressant and anxiolytic potential. Through various experimental methods such as the Vogel conflict test, elevated plus maze, and forced swimming tests, the researchers concluded that CBD had positive effects on the animals when it comes to anxiety and depression.

Additionally, similar studies have also concluded that CBD works in tandem with the 5-HT1A receptor. The modulation of the 5-HT1A receptors can decrease blood pressure through a central control unit in the body. These receptors, when regulated, also decrease a person’s heart rate. These processes are achieved through two methods: vagus nerve stimulation and peripheral vasodilation.

As you know, vasodilation pertains to the widening of a human’s blood vessels. When blood vessels widen, there is more blood flow and in turn, this lowers blood pressure. Overall, experts are saying that not only is CBD excellent for keeping your physical organs healthy, but it’s also a natural cure for mental illnesses

CBD and Depression

Serotonin is the neurotransmitter and chemical in the body which is responsible for our social behavior, mood, sleep, digestion, sexual desire, appetite, memory, and more. These bodily functions are indirectly linked to anxiety and depression. Because these factors can also be direct or indirect causes of depression, serotonin has been touted as the primary connection to this widely known mental disease.

In fact, there is a myriad of anti-depressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) that were manufactured in the 1980s. To date, people diagnosed with depression depend on these medications to combat this mental disease. However, a serious potential adverse effect could be reduced blood clotting which can lead to internal bleeding, especially when SSRIs are taken with other medications like naproxen or ibuprofen.

On the other hand, CBD could be the panacea for depression. Because CBD modulates serotonergic transmission, it contributes to feelings of happiness, clouding any state of anxiety or depression.

Ways to Use CBD for Depression

While the dosage might be different for every consumer, it’s recommended that consumers start with a low dosage and increase, if necessary.

The first way you can use CBD is through vaping. While it’s easy to buy CBD oils online, it’s better to check if the sellers are reliable first. Online dispensaries such as Budmail is a good choice. However, there are also other Budmail alternatives you can try.

Another way to take CBD is through sublingual oils. For those who are not comfortable with any puffing mechanism, dropping the liquid on your tongue is the most suitable method. Plus, this process has an almost instant effect due to the tiny capillaries on the tongue.

Last but not least is the most inconspicuous way of using CBD for depression – edibles. By taking the CBD-induced edible products, you won’t have any trouble inducing this compound in your system anytime and anywhere.
